Hard water, dry summers and bathrooms that stay shut all winter
Most grout is cement-based and porous. It soaks up water, soap, skin oils and whatever is in the mop bucket, and because grout lines sit lower than the tiles, dirty water settles there. Over time the lines go from light grey to brown to nearly black.
Adelaide adds three things of its own. The mains water is harder than most Australian capitals, so showers pick up a chalky limescale-and-soap film that dulls the tiles and grips the grout. Summers are long and dry, so dust and grit come in on feet and settle in floor grout. And in winter, bathrooms stay closed up and dry slowly between showers, which is when mould gets a hold in the corners.
Mopping alone doesn’t fix any of it, and bleach sprays lighten the surface for a while without removing what has soaked in. A proper clean breaks down the film and the dirt inside the grout, then rinses and extracts the dirty water so it doesn’t dry back into the lines.
Older home? Terrazzo from the 1950s and 60s, slate floors from the 70s and 80s, and small-tile bathrooms with a lot of grout are all common in Adelaide. We clean them with products suited to each surface. We don’t polish or restore stone. Guide: looking after terrazzo.

Usually lifts
Everyday dirt, soap scum, body oils and grease, hard-water film, and most surface mould and mildew staining on grout.
Often improves, may not fully lift
Grout that has been dark for years, deep-set stains and old mould shadows. It will be much cleaner, but may not return to its original colour. Colour sealing evens it out.
Cleaning can’t fix
Cracked, crumbling or missing grout and mould growing inside silicone. Those need regrouting or re-siliconing, which we quote separately after an inspection. Water getting in behind tiles needs a waterproofer, not us. We’ll tell you if we see it.

Can you get mould out of shower grout?
Usually, yes. Surface mould and mildew staining on grout normally lifts with the right treatment and scrubbing. Staining that has soaked deep into old grout may leave a shadow, which colour sealing covers, and mould growing inside silicone can’t be cleaned out, only replaced. We’ll tell you which is which before we start.
Do you do regrouting?
Yes, through a licensed tiler. Shower regrouting and grout repair are quoted after an inspection rather than from a price list, because the job depends on how much grout has to come out and what is underneath. Cleaning and sealing need no licence in South Australia; regrouting is treated as building work, so a licensed tiler does it.
Do you clean slate, terrazzo or natural stone?
We clean slate and terrazzo floors (common in older Adelaide homes) with products suited to them, and we clean the grout between natural-stone tiles using neutral products. We don’t polish, hone or restore stone. If the stone itself needs resurfacing, that is a stone restorer’s job and we’ll say so.
Do you clean outdoor tiles?
Yes: alfresco, verandah, balcony and patio tiles are part of our tile and grout cleaning. Pressure washing of pavers, driveways, concrete, roofs and house washing is handled by our sister brand, PressClean.
